The 5 Top Myths About Coaching

by Wendy Mackowski, Inner North Coaching

  1. I don’t really have any problems that need fixing. I’m doing well and don’t need a coach! This could be totally true. It could also be that you aren’t seeing the true value of coaching. Coaching isn’t about fixing problems; it’s more about creating new possibilities. It’s about taking what’s working and expanding it, making your life even better. Is your life as good as it can get?
  1. I can coach myself for free or talk to my best friend. Yes, you can do both of those things, but may not get the same results you get from coaching. You probably won’t ask yourself the hard questions, or see from different perspectives. And your friend is great, but is certainly not unbiased and impartial. The people closest in our lives always have an agenda for us because they are attached to us. Also, beyond an outsider’s perspective and insight, there are professional skill sets involved including techniques, skills, and exercises that can help you move to the next level.
  1. A coach is like a nagging mother. Some people are worried that a coach is there to be on their case about what they aren’t doing. This is part of what’s wrong with the title “coach”—you conjure up a tough sports coach. Nothing could be further from the truth. Coaches are there to partner with you to help you decide for yourself what you want and don’t want; get clarity, and create a plan.
  1. I need to be more organized or successful before I hire a coach. This one gets me! Along with "I don’t have time to add coaching into my life". The point of the coach is to start where you are right now and help you improve from there.
  1. Coaching is so outrageously expensive that only really financially successful people can afford their own personal coach. This might be true about some coaches, but certainly not for all. I work on an hourly basis, not a monthly retainer, so you can control how much coaching time you can afford and would like to receive. I also have special pricing for people with financial concerns. My clients range from high paid executives and professionals to single moms on a budget. The common characteristic: belief in themselves and their potential and a priority on their own growth as important and worthwhile.

My vision is to make coaching easy and available to anyone who truly wants it! Remember, it doesn’t matter where you live, as long as you speak English, I can be your coach!

Coaching is for anyone, but not for everyone--a good client is someone who is interested in making changes, moving forward, and enjoying life more!
