Help! I Want To Google My Lifeby Wendy Mackowski, Inner North Coaching Have you seen the Google earth maps yet? (http://maps.google.com/maps) You put in a location and it not only tells you how to get there, it zooms in from a satellite picture and shows you the actual view from the air. It's fun to look up your house and zoom in on it from space! As people we love knowing where we're going - making plans, setting goals and mapping out our destinations. IT'S TOO BAD WE CAN’T GOOGLE OUR LIFE AND GET A BIRDS EYE VIEW OF WHERE WE ARE GOING. We like the safety and security of knowing what lies ahead. Even though we all know we can never REALLY know, we like to think we have some control over our future. So it is very hard when we have an unexpected change or loss and we are suddenly thrown into what I call The Great Unknown. Life's journey becomes an adventure when you lose your map. It begins with change or loss and moves into the Great Unknown. Change can be painful and sometimes shocking to our system, but the real fear comes when we have to face the Great Unknown without a road map of where we will end up. So the hardest part of change is the transition from what we had to what we will have. It’s what William Bridges calls in his book The Way of Transition, "The Neutral Zone." Loss and change require letting go of what was and the neutral zone is the space between the letting go and the grabbing hold of what is next. Picture a trapeze artist letting go of the bar as he flies through the air to the next one. This is the floating time, the hanging in air waiting for the next bar to appear. We want it to be timed perfectly, not letting go till the next bar is in place, but sometimes life doesn't work that way. Sometimes we are left floating in the air for a time. If we only knew for sure that we couldn't fall, that we could fly steadily until we reached the other side, oh how we could enjoy the adventure of flying! But our fear makes it difficult to enjoy this part. In fact, when fear takes over we may start flailing our arms and legs so much that we lose our timing and begin to fall in a panic. But if we believe in divine timing and have faith that the other bar will appear when we need it to, then we swing and glide with seamless ease and our movements become a work of art. The Great Unknown becomes our playground for exploration and creative expression. Some ideas to think about:
Are you facing The Great Unknown?I find many clients are in the process of change right now - in their business, life, career, etc. If you would like a guide that could help make the journey more fun, more creative, feel more safe, or even get to the other side a little quicker, please give me a call and I would love to talk to you about having a personal coach.
