Does Your Genie Have a Blackberry?

by Wendy Mackowski, Inner North Coaching

Many people still believe that the whole concept of creating your desires by changing your beliefs and attitudes is just a form of "magical thinking". They feel it’s about as practical as finding the genie in a bottle that will grant them three wishes. So what truly is the difference between magical thinking and the magic of believing (or as I call it: The Practice of Intentional Success)? Magical thinking is actually when you hold a vision of some fantasy future and you just expect that you will have it someday. It’s living your life with the hope that something better is always out there in the future. It’s eternal optimism in it’s most detrimental form because it not only robs you of the satisfaction with your life as it is right now, it is also ungrounded in any reality of how you are going to get there. You may have the visioning piece down pat, but you have no plan or strategy moving you towards that vision.

For example, say your dream is to become a great actor. At the same time, your current reality is that you work in a pizza parlor all day and go to lots of movies at night. Meanwhile, you have no plan for moving out of your current reality and towards becoming an actor. Are you saving your money for acting school? Are you volunteering in Community Theater? Magical thinking means that your daily choices are disconnected from your long-term goals. You just hope that someday things will change and your big break will come. You may invest hours thinking about and envisioning yourself acting, but until you align your daily decisions with a plan or strategy, the universe cannot open up for you.

To move out of magical thinking requires being completely clear and grounded in your current reality. Knowing exactly where the gap is between where you are and where you want to be. It requires stepping out of your comfort zone, making the proper contacts, and taking the actions. Only then can the principles of Intentional Success begin to kick in for you. So it’s true that the "Magic of Believing" and "Magical Thinking" can sometimes look the same but the dynamics involved are very different. It’s so easy to slip into magical thinking, especially when pursuing our dreams gets to be hard or discouraging. So how can you be sure which principle you are engaged in at any moment in time?

Begin by asking yourself the following questions:

  1. What is my reality right now?
  2. Where do I want to be and what does that look like?
  3. What limiting beliefs and fears do I need to overcome?
  4. What strategies can I use to get from here to there?
  5. What choices or decisions do I need to change?
  6. What support do I need and how will I stay accountable?

Going through that exercise will begin to put you on the track of reality and not fantasy. It is only from this point that you are ready to overlay the principles of Intentional Success on top of your plan.

These include such things as:

  • Creating a solid vision of your dream
  • Looking for synchronistic events
  • Having unshakable passion
  • Developing a laser-like focus
  • Acting on complete faith

but also balancing these with the paradoxes of flexibility, detachment, and allowing for divine timing. These more esoteric principles are powerful and without a doubt will help propel your plan forward, but they are not the plan itself. They are the fuel but not the car that will get you where you want to be.

Once you have the steps above outlined, then working your plan without using the magic of believing is like heading towards your goal in a covered wagon instead of a car, or staying with the analogy above, like riding a camel instead of a magic carpet! A much slower and rougher ride indeed!
