A Cardinal Rule: Allowing Your Heart To Sing

by Wendy Mackowski, Inner North Coaching

I sit outside on my deck for the first time after a long winter to contemplate writing my newsletter. I'm feeling excited and inspired as the hibernating part of me wakes up and comes alive. I become suddenly aware of the bright red cardinal up in the tree singing for all his worth on this beautiful spring day. I decide to take heed and listen to this lesson from nature. This cardinal had a simple message to convey, but one we humans need to give more attention. His message was one of simplicity: allow your heart to sing!

As a coach I work with many people in transition and change who are in the process of redefining their place in life. They are sometimes stressed, confused, worried, or afraid about what lies ahead for them. What if it was a "cardinal rule" that you had to allow your heart to sing more often? How could that change things? What would be different? What could the cardinal have to teach us about that?

First of all, I can hear some of you skeptics out there already saying, "If I was just a bird in the trees, without any worries or cares, I could sing too, but I've got a mortgage, a sixty hour a week job, three kids to support, a future to plan for, etc. I'd love to just sit around all day and sing!"

Those are good practical points, but let me offer up a different perspective: That cardinal doesn't just sit and sing all day either. From our point of view, he is always in survival mode. He must be looking for food about every two minutes in order to stay alive, he's busy seeking out and building a nest, finding a mate, and then finding more food for all the baby cardinals in the nest, let alone watching for predators 24/7. Its no club med being a cardinal either.

So the point is, the cardinal doesn't sing because he has no responsibilities. The cardinal sings because he is totally living in the moment! He sings because he doesn't worry about what hasn't happened yet. He sings because he has total trust in the process of nature and in his own ability to creatively respond to whatever is needed of him in each moment. He sings because that is his true nature and neither logic nor reason nor circumstance will keep him from it. And when you have trust in the natural order of things, when you are connected to your true nature and able to live with gratitude in the moment, the rest becomes nothing but the details. And those details begin to work out for you and you find more clarity in what you do as you learn to let your heart sing with the joy of life. You begin to get a fresh perspective and a new motivation for life.

So where in your life can you begin to follow this "cardinal rule"? Where can you trust more? Where can you express your true nature more so you can creatively respond in the moment? Where can you begin to allow your heart to sing? As Mr. Cardinal would say, "The rest is just the details."
